As you know Steve most people are lazy and passive and dont want to know until it affects them and screw everyone else. The legacy of the 80s Thatcherism :( I'm alright Jack f*ck you!
Being a new "follower" of your blog and also an unAmerican American, more precisely, an autonomous world visitor, I'd like to drop in two cents.
Recently, I've been reading "A Brief History of Everything" by Ken Wilber, and I think it is natural for humans, just as it is for any "holon" (quark-atom-molecule-cell-organism) to want to have a hierarchy/holarchy and to be inclusive to transcend.
My feelings have been shifting towards an all integral and inclusive planet. Not that the "New Order/One World Government" will be better than it is now as separate functions, it won't. But at least the drive for us all on a planet will perhaps be illuminated in a different way, to perhaps allow us brothers on the other side of the pond to start making better decisions. Obama is just another puppet though, like Bush.
Not sure about the hierarchy bit Paul but then that may just be my natural aversion to the idea - as in "Wherefore I will Not rule, and also ruled I will not be!". If Mr Wilber, I haven't read any of his books, is referring to Mutual Aid by "inclusive" then that I can identify with. I must confess that I got a bit lost halfway down his Wikipedia page but then talk of spirituality always turns me off.
I don't think humanity has much choice other than to start viewing its problems from a global perspective because if global warming is gonna wipe us out it isn't going to do it selectively.

Sadly, all too true.

Maybe I'm wrong.
