Can't Keep It In

I sometimes wonder at the indefatigable resilience shown by those workers who, no matter how many times they get kicked in the balls by their employer, persist in their 'I'm-alright-Jack-the company-will-look-after-me' attitude. Irrespective of the number of management knives sticking out of these guys backs as they wander around the place, they still see the Union as the troublemakers.

You can see their glazed over expressions reflected in their monitors as they swallow the latest company mail about cost cutting or managerial to-ings and fro-ings....

"Oh, what's this? The companies doing rather well. That is good news. I hope it's reflected in my pay rise."

Some weeks later...

"What have we here then? The company has instigated a pay freeze across the board due to the current economic downturn. Well, I'm sure they had to do it. For the good of all of us."

Some weeks later...

"Another company mail. Now, what's this one about? The expenses policy has changed. I can now work a 13 hour day with approx 6 hours of travel included and not expect any additional payments. Well, that won't affect me as I don't have to go to sites."

Some more weeks later...

"Let's see. The company want to close the final salary pension scheme. Those union troublemakers say it is effectively a 20% pay cut, what do they know? The company wouldn't do it if they didn't have to. At least I still have a job."

You get the gist...

"Some of my team are being made redundant? I'm sure its probably best for all concerned. I just hope they don't go to the union and make trouble for the rest of us."

(In order for me to achieve maximum Get This Off My Chest benefit, you need to imagine my voice rising to a crescendo for this rant please)

Huh? What planet are you on? It isn't the union imposing a pay freeze despite healthy profits. It isn't the union fucking up your expenses policy to your detriment. It isn't the union closing your pension scheme because it can't be bothered to keep up with the payments and it most certainly fucking isn't the union making anyone redundant!

Unfortunetly people get stuck in this mentality where they will stick up for things even though they are wrong and against there own best interest. The pattern you see here is repeated in many things, in high performance gaming computing you have fan boys that apologise for the companies that make the defective products etc. Its hard to understand really.

Also some of its down to people buying the whole loyalty to the company guff. The company looks after its own interests first and if needs be will shaft you royaly everytime. The loyalty is always one way.

People are afraid to speak out. They remain convinced that they will lose their jobs and that some pay is better than no pay.
Unlike in the early eighties, unions are not treated with any degree of respect. It is difficult to imagine people employed with Sainsbury's or Tesco's going out on strike at some perceived injustice from the management.

@ FordPrefect - "The company looks after its own interests first and if needs be will shaft you royaly everytime. The loyalty is always one way."

It's that repetition that stumps me though. Where else in life would people be that stupid/devoted as to put up with a regular beating? And don't say marriage.

@ meurglys68 - It isn't so much that this guy is afraid to speak out as he would soon find many similar-minded colleagues if he needed the safety of numbers. It is his constant belief, for want of a better word, that the company are right and the union is wrong on every count. "If you don't like it, you can go somewhere else." is his mantra.
