Nationalism Par Effluents

Received this particular item through my letterbox today, along with one for the UKIP, in order to prime me to vote, from the bottom of British Bulldog heart, for the BNP in the upcoming European Parliamentary elections.

Clearly it isn't going to happen. People like me are not voting BNP - I think that's a pretty safe bet.

But what puzzled me about this leaflet was the sheer jingoistic inappropriateness of the section in red (under the picture of the builders) where it states: "Because We've Earned the Right!" and goes on to list "Trafalgar, The Somme, Dunkirk, D-Day, The Falklands". Anybody with even a vague knowledge of history will realise that these were crushing British victories all... with the exception of The Somme and Dunkirk obviously... and D-Day where we had maybe a couple of hundred Yanks with us... and so on. They've coupled this odd brief march through British military history with a sepia tinted picture of a Spitfire with the headline, yes you guessed it, Battle For Britain.

And therein lies the problem. The remainder of the leaflet is exactly what you expect but to throw in the historical references is baffling. Evocation of the Blitz Spirit falls flat when you consider the number of Commonwealth nations that have fought for Britain, and the similarly diverse Allies we have had, and people will feel that even if they don't immediately spot it. I think its a vote loser.

I read something about that Spitfire used in the leaflet. Apparently it's from a Polish Squadron. Jokes on the BNP I guess.

There is no need for all this sense and knowledge. Just post any old crap misuse the names of some military victories and put on something about the battle of britian. I mean ffs didnt we fight the battle of britain to keep out ignorant bigoted facist dicks like this lot out of the country?

@ Peetr - sounds about right doesn't it? You can't expect them to whip up all this anti-foreigner sentiment and do their research. Their whole idea of protecting indigenous Brits is a joke - how many generations do we go back to prove ancestry? Half of Britain will have to leave - back to Ireland, France, Denmark, Norway, Sweden.... you know, all those Muslim countries.

@ bitterandrew - lol. Ye, data protection has always been high on their list of priorities. Their track record makes them ideal for UK.gov all things considered as an ability to lose data seems to be a prerequisite these days.

@ FordPrefect - You're not wrong and I think others will spot it aswell. Quoting a load of battles, particularly WW2 ones where, as you rightly say, we were fighting fascism, will backfire I think. It makes people think about the past instead of focussing their minds on the present day which, I think ,would've been more to the BNP's advantage. Still, their loss hopefully. And you'll have to change your surname if they ever get in.

Yes it's true that the Spitfire was from a Polish Squadron - coming over here and taking our planes...

Additionally, the site workers at the top of the leaflet are actually american, the three images of the doctor, older couple and mother and child are generic image library photos (the older couple have reportedly expressed anger at being portrayed as fascist sympathisers) and the bearskin adorned soldier has apparently contacted the BNP bunker personally and told them in no uncertain terms where they should go and how they should get there.

They're going to stick to clip art from now on.

Personally speaking, gaining much amusement as Nick Griffin received an egg splattering, he was reported to have stated that he was mostly angry because the whites hadn't been separated.

PS - Highlander, much apologies for absence. I am an indolent scumbag. Will email you soon and explain lack of replying missives.
