Getting The Fear - Last Salute (EP)

My Dad turned 70 this week. We had no plans to see each other (he's in Edinburgh, I'm in Manchester) so, because his birthday 'clashed' with Easter, I had to make sure I sent his card on time for the post.

There is history to this. My failure to remember one of my parent's birthdays (that's right - it was so long ago I have forgotten which one) was a thorn in my side for years. Thankfully, my performance of late, in memory terms, has obviously improved as I am no longer reminded of the event.

However, there is always an underlying tension that ensures I fret over family birthdays to ensure I don't miss one. Lest I plummet in the ratings again.

So, I wrote my Dad's card, bought him an Oxfam Unwrapped gift, to be delivered separately, and tried to match the value with a printable Amazon voucher to stick in the envelope. No such luck - server issues. Not to be deterred, I sent the card - cutting it fine for postal delivery I felt - and resolved to buy an e-mail voucher on the day.

Couple of days later and all throughout the day I am saying to myself, "Remember to buy the Amazon voucher and then ring him, remember to buy the Amazon voucher and then ring him." Unfortunately my daughter wasn't well but that didn't deter me. Even as I was sorting her out and getting her into bed I knew my mission critical goal for the evening.

Once I was clear I sat down at the computer and, ever-so-pleased with myself, proceeded to order my Dad's voucher. Checked and double-checked his e-mail address for delivery, spared him some witty comment about being '70 Years Young' and pressed [Enter]. Gave it 15 minutes or so and then picked up the 'phone.

"Hello," my Mum said.
"Hi, it's me. I'm ringing to say Happy Birthday to my Dad."
"He's in Italy. In Rome for a holiday. He went on Friday. Didn't we tell you?"
"Ye. I forgot."


Curious Guy once described this record as "not-so-interesting". I think he was being kind.
