Shop Assistants - Safety Net (EP)

A bit off the beaten Goth track here with a slice of mid-80's Indie instead. But dear to my heart as I lived in Edinburgh at the time.

Shop Assistants formed in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1983/1984 and, after some personnel changes and a name abbreviation (they were originally Buba & The Shop Assistants), settled down to release two EP's in 1985. The 'Safety Net' EP was the second of the two and saw Alex Taylor on vocals, David Keegan on guitar, Sarah Kneale on bass and both Laura McPhail and Ann Donald on drums.

1986 saw them release 'I Don't Want To Be Friends With You' on 7" and 12" (I think) and their eponymous, and only, album (which will be posted in the future). They also recorded various Radio 1 sessions for Janice Long and John Peel (one of which can be found at The Perfumed Garden).

Alex Taylor left in 1987 to form The Motorcycle Boy with David Scott and various ex-members of Meat Whiplash. The Shop Assistants went into hibernation and my interest waned.

A personal recollection (not mine I hasten to add) is available here and fills out the detail a bit better.

I like 'em a lot. I do have that other 12" and a 7", their first under the Shop Assistants name.
The LP has been posted recently on the 194142434445 blog. It's actually the CD version with some extra tracks.

Glad you switched to another file host. The other one took ages for downloading.

john - I do remember dormannu but don't have anything :( more money on curious guy anyone? Talking of Edinburgh, I do remember reading 'dormannu a new hope' spray painted on the wall outside a council building on york place though - was there for years!

well spotted curious guy - means I can get something else up, not point duplicating 194142434445's work. Will you upload the 'shopping parade' ep? I don't have it but always preferred its version of 'all day long' to the album one.....so it was 'savefile' bottlenecking, apologies everyone...just need to keep my patience, a big ask, uploading to quickshare. Deep breaths, find a happy place, etc.

All day long. That was the track i've been trying to remember since you posted this. Cheers Curious. Festive 50 one year I think.
